surMUM
The theme of surMUM is surrogacy, reproductive technology, in which a woman carries a child for parents, who for some reasons are not able to have children. In Europe, this practice is almost prohibited or has severe restrictions. India, Nepal and Thailand, which have traditionally provided these services, are now closed for surrogate requests. This happened due to the reports of the exploitation of women. Today, foreigners prefer to travel to Ukraine. Surrogate motherhood is officially allowed in Belarus, and it is several times cheaper than in the United States, or even in Kenya.
The research of the theme and writing a script are done collectively. The methodology of the Theatre of the Oppressed (one of its forms – forum theatre), created by Brazilian director Augusto Boal, was used in the work. The topic of forum performances is always related to a social problem and is somehow related to oppression. The purpose of the forum is to overcome this oppression, thus it is a collective or individual search for a way out of this situation. Spectators, unlike in the ordinary theater, are active, they are invited to enter the stage space, replace the actor and change the situation!
The pandemic made us look for a possible format for the performance. We hope that the zoom meeting will provide an opportunity for interactive participation of the audience.
