Spoiled
SPOILED
conceived, written, and directed by Elizabeth Hess
SPOILED dives beneath the unspoken truths of fathers and sons, brothers and lovers – in India, Turkey, Chile and America – to uncover the tangled, messy roots of VAW. The piece is told from the male point of view but is enacted by female performers who breathe life into soulful and searing portrayals of gripping encounters. Drawing on real events that have dominated the news, this timely play comes on the heels of the #MeToo Movement, where women seek to give voice to gender-related taboos and traumas. It grapples with burning issues such as vulnerable child brides, impotent jobless boys, college frat parties, female transgender abuse, infanticide and sexual assault in the Church and military. SPOILED reveals how rigid gender roles can inhibit, with devastating consequences.
This piece sheds light on the role patriarchy plays in perpetuating misogyny by exposing the accepted power of the male voice to co-opt female experience.
