Richard iii Redux OR Sara Beer is/not Richard III premieres 8th March, International Women's Day, in Cardiff.

Dear friends and colleagues,

I hope you'll permit me taking this opportunity to share news of forthcoming productions, masterclasses and events which I hope you'll find interesting, plus some links to some of my recent essays for online journals.

First up:

richard iii redux OR Sara Beer is/not Richard III premieres on 8th March, International Women's Day, at Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff, before touring Wales. We've had a huge amount of interest about the production and Sara Beer and I will be on The Arts Show on BBC Radio Wales on 3rd March. I've included links to the trailer and some of the commissioned features, below:

Second and thirdly:

In April I'm giving masterclasses on inclusive practice in Hong Kong, then joining Phillip Zarrilli and Sara Beer in Singapore for the premiere of my Unlimited International CommissionAnd Suddenly I Disappear: the Singapore 'd' Monologues, with Peter Sau, Grace Khoo and Ramesh Meyyappan, amongst other Deaf and disabled performers. The production transfers to London's Southbank for the Unlimited Festival 5-6 September, followed by a short UK tour. Fourth:

I'm delighted to be returning to Ty Newydd Writing Centre, for my annual masterclass:

Masterclass on writing for performance. 11 - 16 June 2018

This is a masterclass for experienced writers who are seeking guidance with the shaping and direction of their work-in-progress, or who have an idea formulating, burning to get on the page. This intensive but enjoyable week is structured with daily practical workshops and exercises to find entry points for new writing, and skills-based tasks to develop technique and strengthen your work. This will include approaches to editing and revision, developing character, plot, dynamic, and the world of your play. We will explore the most effective dramatic structure for your script or best form for your performance writing, finding clarity about what you really want to say and how best dramaturgically to communicate it.

There will be one-to-one dramaturgical sessions during the week; evening practical workshops; and a chance to share work-in-progress and garnering constructive feedback.

As this is a popular course with an unusually small group for experienced writers (8 participants) there will be a selection process. You will be asked to outline your project, areas of concern you wish to address, and share some work-in-progress, even if just an idea. This will enable the week to be bespoke, structured specifically towards developing the work of the participants. Contact Tŷ Newydd with your application.

An advance reading list will also be provided. At the end of the week you will be ready for the next stage in your writing, with new starting points and techniques.

Fifth:

I'm completing my 2017/18 Creative Wales Award from ACW exploring "the performative power of words with music." I've been talking with bards, librettists, and poets, making spoken word/sound art with Adrian Curtin, workshopping with John Hardy's students of composition at RWCMD, sitting in on rehearsals at Music Theatre Wales, and experimenting with composers and text. It's been wonderful, and a great gift of time and encouragement from Arts Council Wales. I hope to share some of this work later in the Summer.

 Finally:

It's been a period of writing about diversity and representation on our stages, with pieces for Howl Round , Books by Women and essays about intercultural dramaturgy from being a Fellow at IRC: International Research Centre 'Interweaving Performance Cultures' at Freie Universitat, Berlin, 2011-17. These include The Aging Body in Dance, edited by Gabriele Brandstetter and Nanako Nakajima and Moving Across Borders: Performing translation, Intervention, Participation, edited by Gabriele Brandstetter and Holger Hurting. A further essay on intercultural dramaturgy edited by Christel Weiler and Torsten Jost follows.

It's been quite a year!

Hoping this finds you all thriving and being creative..

Warmest wishes,
