go drag! festival munich
Under the title "go drag! munich", Munich's first drag festival will take place from 1 to 5 May at the Pathos Theatre, the Gasteig HP8 and other venues.
What makes a man, what makes a woman? Do such criteria even exist? And if so, how useful are they? From 1 to 5 May 2024, artists will pose these questions in very different performances - and provide answers in a variety of ways.
Cabaret shows will present first-class drag king talents from Munich as well as newcomers and international artists. Around 30 events over 5 days offer everything from theatre scenes with puppets to lecture performances and concerts: glitz and glamour, depth and tragedy, great emotions and lots of humour. Discussions, lectures and exhibitions invite visitors to explore drag as an artistic and political form of expression. Films on the subject and a drag flea market complete the programme.
Gender Performance legend Bridge Markland together with Diane Torr (Grand Daddy of Drag Kings) invented the go drag! festival concept. The first two editions took place in Berlin in 2002 + 2022. Together with PATHOS Theater and Gasteig München GmbH, Bridge Markland + Munich Drag artist Ruby Tuesday have created a special version just for Munich. Partners are HochX, schwere reiter, the NS-Dokumentationszentrum München, Theater Drehleier and Kunsthalle München. The focus is not on the well-known drag queens, i.e. men who impersonate women. Instead, the festival deliberately focuses on drag kings and queens, portrayed by female, trans* and non-binary artists.
People who have previously had little to do with the queer cultural scene can discover just how diverse it is: while Cora Frost as Peter Frost gives a deep insight into a sensitive macho heart at a rock concert, Majic Dyke from Kenya reports on the rights of local queer people in a lecture performance. Pandora Nox, winner of Drag Race Germany, shares her best drag moves in a workshop. Bridge Markland herself not only talks about her life and work, but also dusts off classic theatre material with performance, puppetry and playback for a wide audience. Artist, organiser and drag daddy Ruby Tuesday presents an edition of Munich's only male impersonator revue "Kings of Munich". On the final day of the festival, Helen Varley Jamieson will moderate the panel discussion "Drag and Politics" with Majic Dyke, Buba Subaba and Eric BigClit.
