The first online Magdalena festival asks what happens to theatre when bodies are distant?

"Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next." Arundhati Roy (2020)

Bodies:On:Live – Magdalena:On:Line is the first online Magdalena festival, celebrating the work of women in contemporary theatre and performance. It aims to (re)connect women all over the world via the internet as we encounter each other with/in our artistic endeavours. This first online festival continues the Magdalena tradition of international festivals that have, for over three decades, brought together women theatre and performance makers in intense, nourishing, physical encounters. In the current global context, Bodies:On: Live offers an online space for the evolution of this tradition, inviting embodied practioners, those who are experienced in performing online and those new to the field. The programme of engaging and inspiring work will be accessible via the internet to international participants and audience.

Bodies:On:Live calls us together to explore the online space, to keep our encounters alive and inclusive; and to ask, what is the way forward? How will our live, embodied artistic practice be transformed and continue to engage and inspire us in the online space? What happens to theatre when bodies are distant, when here is also there?

From the festival initiator, Elizabeth de Roza:

Dear Magdalenas,

We are buzzing with anticipation and excitement about Bodies:On:Live, the first online Magdalena festival! A total of 33 events happen over four days (24-27 June): performances, artists’ talks, panel discussions and more. The pre-festival programme of eight workshops begins on 5th June.

The programme brings together artists and researchers who have years of experience working online, with embodied practitioners who are new to the digital world. We’re interested in how artists from different locations have re-imagined performance-making in the online space, including Asia, South America, Europe and the Pacific. We also have digital natives with us, to share how they create in the online world they have grown up with.

And what is a Magdalena festival without a social? "Meet the Magdalenas" is an informal gathering of long-standing members of the network, to share their stories and have a drink with all of you (yes, it is BYO!). And throughout the festival you can join daily yoga sessions and visit the ObservaStory - a unique online gallery of videos showing the Magdalena history, where you can meet, chat and watch videos together.

Please join us and celebrate with us as women standing in solidarity through our artistry. You can find all the necessary information here: https://onlinefestival.themagdalenaproject.org/program/

And I invite you to donate to the festival. The team are all volunteers and we do not have any funding. We need donations to cover our technical costs, and to give something back to artists who are so generously sharing their work with us. https://www.paypal.me/bodiesonlive

See you at the festival.

Warmly,

Elizabeth, on behalf of the festival team
