Stories of Strength: Women Speak Out
As we begin the UN's 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence, people around the world unite to call for an end to violence against women. Join us in addressing this issue.
Myths and Truths, 2021-23
In South Africa, we worked with young actor-activists to create the play, Myths and Truths in collaboration with Rape Crisis Trust, to bring vital awareness to the community about the prevalence and secrecy around gender-based violence.
This play tells eight short stories that illustrate common myths about rape, harassment, coercion, and how to avoid them. Following the performance, the audience freely shares their views and solutions. Below is one such story:
“Boxing up our trauma, our pain, our regrets. No one to rely on, no shoulder to cry on! Real men don't cry, real men don't hit women, real men don't lie. Real men don't rape. Then I ask you my brothers, where are all the real men?”
– excerpt from a poem by Chad, Rape Crisis Trust
Crystal Heart, 2022
This play shone a light on domestic violence, a subject rarely discussed openly, and gave specific information about where to seek help. Developed with the psychologists of the Union Crisis Centre in Kazakhstan, the play was performed in six cities with each performance followed by helpful conversations with the audiences.
"Now he keeps hitting me and hitting and hitting me! Jealous of everything! He took my freedom! I still love him, but every day there is more fear in my heart than love..."
- Dana, in her role as a young wife
Fanm Yo Di Ase! (Women Say Enough!), 2011-12
In Haiti, we partnered with FAVILEK to create Women Say Enough!, highlighting the rampant sexual violence in post-earthquake camps. The troupe addressed this difficult subject using song, dance and humor, fostering resilience and solidarity.
“We are victims. We won’t die in silence. We’re already victims.
We won’t die in silence”
- sang the chorus of FAVILEK members
