Why theatre matters—Right now!

"I thank all those who showed me new aspects of the art of theatre.
Life is generous after all."
- Hristina, Mostar Youth Theatre, Bosnia & Herzegovina
Why Theatre as a response to crises? Theatre opens minds, and transforms lives and communities by encouraging freedom of expression, sparking dialogue, and inspiring joy and hope — especially when the world needs it most.
Recent US foreign aid cuts have hit our international programs hard, threatening our work in places like Myanmar, Thailand, South Africa, as well as the project we had already begun in Jordan, training 60 young women in theatre in support of women's rights. (Read more in this American Theatre article). But you keep our work alive!
Right now, we’re thrilled to announce a new project for refugees on the Myanmar-Thai border, thanks to kind support from Rational Games, an organization that uses games and play to teach negotiation and resolve conflict. Our mission and methods align perfectly.
In partnership with 6 additional refugee-led organizations in Thailand, we will bring our uplifting games and improvisations for psychosocial support and conflict mediation to help refugees facing displacement and inter-ethnic tensions. To ensure that this joyous work continues, we also train their staff of social workers, psychologists, and educators.
Your donations will sustain these efforts, amplifying hope and mutual understanding in crisis-hit communities. Stay tuned for a deeper dive into our plans!
Locally, our Shinbone Alley Stilt Band delighted audiences at the Queens Farm Museum. An audience member said, “You gave me such joy... and we really need it!” The Band will be at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden on Saturday, October 25th.
Join us on Saturday, October 18th, at Open House NYC on East 4th Street, and learn to walk on stilts. For our 22nd year, we're leading NYC’s Halloween Parade!
Join us to keep these stories alive -- donate today!
